Greetings to All,
February is the designated month for African American History. I almost forgot to pay homage to Black History Month because there has been so much in the news about deaths especially in the African American community. We have lost Etta James, Don Cornelius (Peace, Love, and Soul), and finally Whitney Houston.
I celebrate Black History Month every month of the year. I am a collector of African artifacts such as masks, Asante stools, dolls, and jewelry. I have been blessed to have been to Africa and made friends with my African counterparts who have brought me artifacts from the homeland. In my neighborhood, there is a store called Global Infusions that carries African artifacts as well as Asian. When I walked in the store, it so reminded me of my home and my travels. My home is African theme with a little bit of Japanese and Chinese culture. These cultures are so close to me. Anyways, I purchased a necklace made out of brass. The history behind the piece is that the brass was once used in Ghana as a form of currency. When brass was no longer used as currency, it was used as jewelry. It is quite a conversational piece. I wore it with a black turtle neck and black slacks.
I also, stumbled on a brand called MADE. MADE is a Kenyan made line exclusively for
the outnet.com. The line is created to
encourage fair trade in Africa and consists of brass. I purchased the brass stackable rings which
can be found at http://www.theoutnet.com/product/250775. What a good way to give back to the community
while fashionable with unique pieces.
What I liked most about MADE is the philosophy behind the ethical accessories. The artisans believe in creating products
while promoting trade and not aid. My
motto is “be in charge of your own rescue mission.”
Blessings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
