Personal Stylists.... is there really a need when you have style?

On Thursday, I went to meet with a personal stylist at Nordstroms.  I was really hesitant to go because, I feel I can dress myself.  My husband urged me to go so I can get out the house.  I was contacted by Nordstroms a week prior about their personal stylists on hand and they offered me $50 off the first purchase.  I am in sort of a predicament at this time about my purchases:  1.  I don't have a job, 2.  I am not at my idea weight (I am weight training now and working out harder with all the free extra time on my hands), and 3. I don't like shopping.  Let me explain the latter, I love fashion, however, I don't like shopping for it.  When I got to the store, I have an agenda.  I know what I am buying, how much it costs, and how it is going to fit prior to going to the store.  I loathe going into stores and searching for things. Since, I have various salespersons at stores like Louis Vuitton, Barneys, and Neiman Marcus calling me up when things come in that I may like, I said what the heck, let me give the stylist a try.

Well, the stylist called me on the phone for a consultation.  I told her what size I wear (based on Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, and Lands End Canvas; that is where I buy clothes because of the fit and quality for the most part) and I specifically told her that I don't like rayon or mixed fabrics.  I am an old school girl when it comes to fabric at 100% all the way of gabardine, wool, cashmere, cotton, silk, leather, fur, and throw a little spandex in the mix because this girl has curves.  She agreed and we confirmed the appointment.

I met with my stylist and she put me in a dressing room with all the clothes that she picked out for me.  Let me tell you, I was so disappointed, that I was aggravated.  All her choices were absolutely wrong.  I do take the blame with the sizes because sizes vary by store.  My stylist didn't have an idea what she was in for.  Mind you, she was about a size 2 or 4 straight up and down.  The clothes that she selected were for boyish figures.  I specifically told her that I am athletic with curves (I have a large; but shapely posterior).  I told her that I was a size 8 or 10 depending on the fit.  Every piece of clothing that she brought out had rayon in it or it was a mixed fabric.  Did she not listen to me?

I styled women at Ann Taylor Loft and I can look at a woman no matter what size she is and help her select clothing that is going to complement her.  After about 20 items of clothing, I end up buying a pair of Lafayette 148 100% wool slacks in a size 10 (could of done an 8 since I am still losing weight).  The stylist explained to me that the pants were at a higher price point and she didn't know if I would be interested.  If she was listening carefully, she would of known that I like quality pieces and would of been happy with purchasing 1 quality piece over 4 crappy ones.

I must say on a personal standpoint, I liked the stylist; but I wouldn't call her to dress me.  Maybe track down some more Lafayette 148 wool pants or suit or some Celine handbags that maybe marked down in the future.

In conclusion, I know my body and I know what I like.  That is the difference between people who have style and people who rely on stylists to dress them.

Dooney and Bourke Leather Janine Satchel

Good Evening All, This week has been rather hectic.  Dealing with family issues and job interviews at the same time.  All is good and the Creator is in charge.  I had purchased a Dooney and Bourke bag about two months ago to store my keys, ipod and identification when I workout at the gym. The bag wasn't a great choice and I end up exchanging the bag for a Dooney and Bourke Leather Janine Satchel in gray. At first I didn't really like the Janine Satchel because of the size.  I love big bags; however since I have lost over 20 pounds, big bags are starting to overwhelm my stature.  I wanted a gray bag because I wear a lot of gray outfits and have been unable to find the perfect gray bag.  There are many different shades of gray that tend to be a little taupe or have a bluish undertone.  This bag is more on the heather gray side with the beige vachetta accent. It is the perfect bag for the warmer months.  The leather reminds me of the Prada S...

I Am Back

Blessings To Everyone, It has been two months since I last blogged.  I have been extremely busy with work.  I was working on a dress for success event with both my employers that includes Ann Taylor.  We created an initiative to teach graduates how to dress for interviews and what to wear for work.  At my primary job, we have to create initiatives along with my current job duties. The event was a success. One of the student models was offered a job at the new Loft flagship in Chicago. I also have been contemplating which way I would like this blog to go.  The blog started out as a self help for me and to inspire others as well. I want to focus on inspiring others. In the past two months I have been out of town to Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.  Going to New York was one of the things I wanted to do before I leave this world.  I would say that it is part of my bucket list.  I enjoyed myself.  You know I love all thing...

Flip Flops..... To Love or Not To Love

Blessings, I hope everyone is enjoying the weather.  The weather here in Chicago has been iffy.  We are experiencing weather that is normal for the month of April.  I can't complain because at least we are getting rain instead of the drought of 2012.  Also, many blessings to those that have experienced tornadoes and flooding. With warmer weather brings the love hate relationship with flip flops.  In my weekly team meeting yesterday, the Director was going over the dress code (fashion seems to be a little laxed in warmer months) for the summer.  One of the things that he mentioned that struck a cord was no flip flops.  There has been a lot of debate about the health reasons against flip flops causing arch and leg pain; foot viruses in the locker room/shower room; and fractures from missteps or weather.  In the workplace, flip-flops are prohibited in some instances and are considered very casual wear in addition to sweats and shorts. On ...
